On the Road - Sixteen Tracks Later

After seventeen years of spectating at drag strips throughout Western Canada and at various NHRA National Events we began racing in 1988. Since that time we have raced in ET Brackets, Superstreet and SuperStock. From the beginning we have enjoyed travelling to and racing at tracks throughout Western Canada and the United States. Our goal is to have raced at thirty tracks before we retire from racing. This is where we have been to date (September 30, 2013):

  1. Saskatchewan International Raceway – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – this was the first track we raced at beginning in 1988. It is our home track, and although we like to travel, we still manage to race at SIR three or four weekends every year. We have raced in ET Brackets, Superstreet and Super Stock at SIR: The highlight of our years at SIR is Diane’s track championship in the Pro Comp class in 1994.
  2. 10th Ave NE – Medicine Hat, Alberta – racing in Medicine Hat began with organized racing on 10th Ave NE in an industrial park. We began racing ET Brackets in 1988 and raced on the street (race track) for several years.
  3. Race City Speedway – Calgary, Alberta - in the fall of 1988 we purchased our 1967 Camaro Super Stock after the completion of SIR’s season. So it was off to Calgary and our first race at Race City Speedway. We continued to race in Calgary until 2004 competing in ET Brackets, Superstreet and Super Stock.
  4. Brainerd International Raceway – Brainerd, Minnesota – our first NHRA divisional race was in Brainerd in May, 1989 with the Super Stock Camaro. We lost in the first round and have never returned as the event was usually too early in our season.
  5. Renegade Raceways – Yakima Washington – from 1989 to 1991 we raced the SuperStock Camaro in NHRA Division VI Competition and generally started our Divisional Races in Yakima.  Our best performance was a SuperStock runner-up finish in 1990.
  6. Woodburn Dragstrip – Woodburn, Oregon – Woodburn was one of the Di vision VI tracks we attended with the SuperStock Camaro from 1989 to 1991.  Woodburn was a great track although it never allowed us past the first or second round.  Our best recollection of Woodburn is the owner, Jim Livingstone, walking the line of trucks and trailers to personally welcome the racers to Woodburn.
  7. Champion Raceway – Medford Oregon – Medford and Woodburn ran back-to-back divisional races from 1989 to 1991 so it was natural for us to attend Medford the weekend following the Woodburn race with the SuperStock Camaro.  It also allowed us a bit of vacation as we travelled down the Coast Highway along the Pacific Ocean in the week between races.
  8. Seattle International Raceway – Kent, Washington – our attendance at Seattle International Raceway (now Pacific Raceways) has been limited to the NHRA National Event in late July, early August.  In 1991 we raced the SuperStock Camaro to a semi-final loss and in 1995 raced the Superstreet Barracuda to a second round loss\.
  9. Eagle Motorplex – Ashcroft, B.C   - the Eagle Motorplex is one of the tracks we have attended numerous times over the years racing in ET Brackets, Superstreet, and SuperStock.  We have not been back since 2004 but would like to return to run Hot Rod in the annual IHRA Summitt Pro-Am race held each June.
  10. Mission Raceway – Mission B.C. – Mission Raceway usually held its divisional race early in the season making it difficult for us to attend.  However in 1993 we made our one trip to Mission to race in Superstreet.  It was a short event as we broke our Chrysler rear end on our third time trial.  We hightailed it home and Race Craft Performance replaced the broken rear end with a Ford 9”  in the following week.
  11. Castrol Raceway – Edmonton, Alberta – we have raced at Castrol Raceway in both NHRA National Opens and IHRA Summitt Pro AM  races.  Our best finish was a runner-up in Superstreet in 2003
  12. MHRDA -Medicine Hat, Alberta – since our return to racing in 2011 we have attended the Medicine Hat Big Buck Race and the NHRA National Open each year.  Medicine Hat has been good to us with round wins in the Big Buck and runner ups in Superstreet at the National Opens in 2012 and 2013.

Medicine Hat Drag Strip - 2013
  13. Oahe Speedway – Pierre, South Dakota – in 2011 we attended two races at Oahe, a three day ET bracket weekend (2nd round losses Saturday and Sunday and water leaks on Monday) and the NHRA National Open.  The National Open was our first race running Superstreet since our return.  We qualified #1 with a perfect ll: 00 ET and lost in the third round.  We returned for the National Open again in 2013 and encountered electrical gremlins resulting in 1st round and 2nd round losses.
  14. Estevan Drag Racing Association – Estevan, Saskatchewan – Estevan was our first eighth-mile track.  Racing at Estevan is tricky on the slick weathered airport runway surface but we have learned how to compensate and in 2013 won the “A” – Side Bracket at the Dennis Needin Memorial Race.

Estevan Drag Strip – 8th mile airport track - 2012
  15. Kambusters – Yorkton, Saskatchewan – Yorkton is another 1/8 mile airport track.  We have raced in Yorkton once and found the traction equal to any regular full-time drag strip.  Their major race is run in late July each year.
  16. Swift Current Drag Racing Association – Swift Current, Saskatchewan – Swift Current runs three double header quarter mile races a year at the Swift Current Airport.  The track has a concrete starting line and new pavement. We have attended once in 2013, and managed a semi-final finish and a 1st round loss.

We will update this little piece of history as the years go by and we’ll open the many boxes of photograghs from years ago and see if we can update our pictures of the tracks we have raced at.
