The Runner-Up – Nikki Horne - Saskatoon

Nikki Horne Nikki Horne got a late start in a Junior Dragster not beginning until she was 13 in 2008 and that was at the last race of the season at SIR. However racing is in the Horne family genes and she won that first race. In her short racing career of four years she has won her first race in 2008 and runner-upped in the Big Buck Shootout two years in a row (2010/2011). Her best points finish was in 2011 (5th place). Nikki also competes at the National Open in Medicine Hat each year and at Yorkton once or twice a year.

Away from the race track Nikki attends Grade 11 at St. Joseph High School and enjoys hanging out with her friends. Nikki also plays piano, enjoys reading and writing and plays ringette. Upon completion of High School she is making plans to attend University and is considering majors in Law, Psychology or English.

The Junior Dragster that Nikki competes with was built by Louis Martin of Martin Components in Regina. The dragster is powered by a Tecumseh engine and crewed by her dad Jerry and Uncle Cliff Horne. Best ET to date is 8.13 with a 77-80 mph speed. The dragster was painted by Lazer Auto Body. Sponsorship assistance comes from Roof Management and Inspection Services and BrockWhite Construction Materials.

Nikki wished to thank her dad Jerry and Uncle Cliff for making Junior Dragster a lot of fun for her. She enjoys being at the track where her dad describes her as a “social butterfly”.

The Winner – Luke Matheis – Prince Albert

Luke Matheis almost didn’t get a chance to race a Junior Dragster. In 2008 his older brother Jacob outgrew the dragster and his older sister Nicole was the next in line to drive. However she declined and Luke got the ride in the JNL (Jacob/Nicole/Luke) Race Team Junior Dragster beginning in 2009. Luke has competed for three years with two wins in prior years and strong finishes in the SIR points races with an 6th place finish in 2009 and a 4th place finish in 2011. The win at the 2011 SIR Big Buck Shootout Race was his biggest win to date.

Luke and Don MathiasThirteen year old Luke attends Grade 7 at Red Wing School in Prince Albert and lives with his dad Don and mom Elona and his brother and sister on an acreage north of Prince Albert. He spends his time away from the race track snowboarding, riding his BMX bike and snowmobiling on the trails on the acreage.

The JNL Race Team Junior Dragster was acquired new from Cosby Motorsports in 2004. It was orginally powered by a Briggs and Stratton gas motor. The paint scheme on the car was applied by sponsor TBS Collision in Prince Albert. Since its’ debut in 2004 the motor has been upgraded twice and is currently powered by ZR Stage 9 race engine. This engine has powered the Junior Dragster to a best ET of 8.23 and a best MPH of 79.99. The junior dragster is unique in that is the only remaining junior dragster still being raced since the junior dragster class was introduced to SIR in 2004. Luke’s dad Don has been the crew chief on the dragster since it was purchased. Don enjoys the mechanical aspects of the junior dragster class and feels the junior dragster has given both Jacob and Luke a strong understanding of the mechanics of racing and an understanding and respect for driving.

JNL Junior DragsterLuke thanked his dad and mom for giving him the opportunity to race and sponsor TBS Collision for their assistance. He also wished to thank the Saskatchewan Drag Racing Association and the sponsors of Junior Drag Racing for promoting and running the junior dragster class at SIR.
