1/18 Scale 1965 Plymouth Altered Wheelbase “The Virginian” Driven by Pee Wee Wallace.
“The sixties were turbulent times for drag racing. GM, Ford and Chrysler were actively involved in drag racing and each manufacturer had programs in place to support drivers and race teams. That changed in 1963when GM dropped it’s factory support for racing, but things did not change for Ford and Chrysler. Their rivalry continued to grow, and when Chrysler heard that Ford was going to drop the formidable SOHC 427 into their smaller Mustangs and Comets for the ‘65 A/FX race season, Chrysler decided that radical measures were needed to keep their mid size Belvederes and Coronets competitive.
The Chrysler racing engineers were made up of many people that had “cut their teeth” in drag racing. They were fully aware that one of the main handicaps in drag racing was the lack of traction. The engineers devised a plan to acid dip the metal bodies, add fibreglass body panels and move the wheels forward on the drag cars, which would make them lighter and put more weight over the rear tires to improve traction. Dick Landry had already altered the wheel base on his ‘64 Dodge, using a front straight axle, but the engineers were going to use all factory suspension parts…..”
